Disney's Brave: Review

It's 2020 not 2012

Brave is a Disney animation released on June, 22 2012. It is Pixtar Animations movie with Brenda Chapman as one of the directors. Who's done most of the Disney stories and turned them into classics. Originally, I thought it was just another princess movie with a girl in distress. It turns out its anything but a damsel in distress story.

Red Heads like Ariel & Merida

Who doesn't like fiery characters with red passionate spirits or a Scottish leading lady with red curls? Or a mermaid starved for a man. Katherine Sarafian produced Pixar 'The Incredibles' doesn't have red locks, however she's been involved in great cinema like this. And a short animation film: 'Lifted' about alien abduction to boast her resume. It's cute just like Brave. She also did story boards for 90's nostalgic: 'Little Mermaid' and others.

Brave for Bears

Brave is about arranged marriages between families and mother and daughter relationships on the brink of disaster. Do not get me started on arranged marriages. Merida would have to marry another prince in the family line because its Scottish tradition . I cried all the princess wanted to do archery and her mom kept forcing the hetero-normative on her. She did not want babies and marriage. This movie took Disney to its first feminist role in its history of cinema. With exception of Mulan 2008, Brave has no leading prince. Now Frozen has chosen to have the lead be dare we say 'queer?' It is A-okay with me to have speculated lesbian icons as leading Disney characters. Especially ones as cute as Merida who turns her mom --the queen into a bear. ** SPOILER not like you haven't seen it.**

Go see it's A++
